Barbecue Steak Sandwich

Serves 4 | 

Layers of amazing flavor.


4 hoagie buns, halved
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 tablespoons butter
Mozzarella cheese slices
2 lb boneless steak, sliced thin
2 sweet onions, sliced thin
Salt, to taste
2 tablespoons canola oil
1/2 cup barbecue sauce
Ground black pepper, to taste


  1. Preheat oven to 400° F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Pour canola oil into a skillet. Bring to medium heat. Once hot, reduce heat to low then add sweet onions, sprinkle with salt. Cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and cook for an additional 10-15 minutes. (Onions should be caramelized) Transfer to a plate.
  3. Pour olive oil into a separate skillet and bring to medium heat. Once hot, add steak and cook for 6-8 minutes. Stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper if desired. Transfer steak to a plate.
  4. Butter the hoagie rolls with remaining butter. Place rolls butter side down in the skillet and lightly toast for 2 minutes. Transfer to baking sheet.
  5. Sprinkle half of the cheese on the bottom slices of both rolls. Then arrange the steak and onions on top of cheese. Sprinkle remaining cheese on top.
  6. Place in the oven and bake for 5-8 minutes. Remove from the oven and pour barbecue sauce over top of cheese, steak and onions. Complete the sandwich with top bun and enjoy!
